The Clairvoyant and I enjoy dessert as much as any other person with a sweet tooth. Among our favorites during the summer, which is coming up fast in a few months time, is the halo-halo. Literally translated as "mixed-up" or "mix," it is perhaps the most popular dessert or even snack during the hot summer season. In fact, one will see a lot of local restaurants and eateries offering halo-halo and informal stands sprouting everywhere offering different versions of the popular treat. It seems quite perfect to enjoy a day at the beach alternating between swimming/wading and eating halo-halo aside, of course, to sipping your favorite drink. But even during the rainy season or the colder months from December to February, the halo-halo is very much popular. In fact, halo-halo is on the regular menus of many local restaurants including a popular fast food chain - Chowking.

As shown in the photos above, it is a mix of many ingredients including ice cream (usually ube, macapuno or vanilla), leche flan (custard), pinipig, sago (tapioca), kaong (?), bananas (saba variety), langka (jack fruit), and various types of beans together with crushed ice and milk. There are many other versions including those with only few ingredients, some even focusing on the sweetest ones.

The popularity of the halo-halo has even reached other countries, including those that have similar desserts like China, Japan and ASEAN countries that have similar treats as the Philippines. In fact, in our recent travel to the US, we chanced upon a shop that offered halo-halo.

I will feature other halo-halo in future posts including the also popular version by Razon's of Pampanga once I get to experiencing these again on some trips during the summer and probably getting a few photos here and there.
